Start with exposure, then build the specification
Direct salt spray, distance from salt water, sheltered areas that do not rinse naturally, and contact with dissimilar metals all deserve attention. Specify compatible clips, fasteners, flashings, sealants and roof accessories with the panel system. A suitable panel can still be undermined by incompatible details.
Coastal roofs also need a movement strategy, roof-to-wall details, penetrations and a maintenance plan. For balconies, porches and overhangs, coordinate the roof with soffit and fascia finishes rather than choosing each surface in isolation.
Coastal warranty eligibility depends on the exact product, finish, exposure, registration and maintenance requirements. Review the current written terms for paint, substrate and any separately available watertightness coverage.
